Experience Description I was sixteen years old when I was given an overdose of fentanyl during oral surgery. There was no monitor, no narcan, or anything in the room to save me. The oral surgeon put the IV in and left the room to grab his tools. I remember feeling myself fading. I was struggling to breathe and choking. My heart was beating so erratically that it stopped. I wasn’t panicking throughout the dying process because I have never felt afraid of death itself. I knew I had a lot of medical problems that could very well kill me. I felt warm and weightless as I sat in this void. My head had finally gone quiet. Then, I was in this bright place that I assumed was heaven. I wasn’t afraid. We didn’t need to communicate by mouth because we all just understood each other. In my experience, we didn’t have normal bodies because we were basically balls of energy in the shape of a body. I remember getting down on my knees in front of Jesus and saying, "I understand if it is my time to go, but make sure my family is okay." Jesus lifted me up, blessed me, kissed me on the forehead, and said, "You need to go back and share your story." I felt the warmest hug I’ve ever received. Then I came back to my body, which was comatose. The doctors had just gotten me stable. They wanted to take the stress off my heart by putting me in a medically induced coma. I also had a stroke, then was put in a second coma. I awoke when my older sister walked in. After recovering, I learned that I had survived a less than one percent chance of living, and that my heart stopped three times. I had suffered cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, pulmonary edema, and a hemorrhagic stroke - all at sixteen years old. I should not have survived but I did. And since then, I’ve had multiple spiritual experiences.
