Experience Description

I was in my hospital room and kept hearing the speaker system announce "Code blue, room number XXX." I remember going to sleep, thinking about how my practice would be affected by being off for a few days and going over our finances. I must have fallen asleep. Then I was lying in bed, hearing the code blue alert and thinking there were a lot of code blues that night. I sat up, looked around the room, and heard "Code blue, room number XXX." I think it was room 289; I'm not sure. I realized, "289? That's my room number."

I sat up in bed, wondering what was going on. Then suddenly, I was floating in the hallway and moving upward. I wondered how I got there. As I floated, four people with a wheeled chart entered what I assumed was my hospital room. While I was still floating up, I was still questioning how this was happening. I saw a rush of memories and realized my chronic back pain was gone. I felt no pain at all.

I realized that I must be dead. I thought about unfinished things such as paying off the house and regarding my family. But I kept floating. I said, "God, I can't die. I have too much left to do." Then I pleaded, "God, I can't die. Marissa will be devastated." I kept floating. I thought of my wife, who is 21 years younger than me. "God, my wife needs me. I have to live to support my family and help her with our daughters." I floated upwards some more. Then it struck me that my two-year-old daughter would be without her father. I prayed, "God, don't let me die, my baby daughter needs her father." The question came again: "Why should you live?" I replied, "My baby daughter needs her dad." Asked once more, I repeated, "My baby daughter needs her dad. I beg you in Jesus's name, let me live so I can be there for her."

I started descending. A tunnel of gray clouds appeared, and I rushed through it at incredible speed. The tunnel dipped downward before rising again, and ahead I saw a brilliant light. Entering the light, I suddenly gasped for air and opened my eyes to painful brightness.

A nurse told me that I had been intubated for a week in a medically induced coma. They gave me pudding to eat but I was still restrained and desperately thirsty. Water was withheld because my heart retained too much fluid. While in and out of consciousness, I kept hearing, "Why should you live?" and answering, "my baby daughter needs her dad." Weeks passed before I regained strength, and some mental fog lingered.

I believe I’m alive because my baby daughter needs her father.
