Experience Description PUNAH JANMA - 40 Days at Yam Dwar - The Return of Pulin P In July 2020, during the first wave of COVID-19 in India, I became seriously ill and was hospitalized by my son, Soham. At that time, hospitals were full and ventilators were extremely difficult to obtain. Within two or three days of being admitted, I went into a coma. I had already seen patients around me dying. Beds that had been occupied would suddenly become empty within a few hours, and the staff would later confirm that the patient had died. Because of COVID restrictions, family members generally were not allowed into the ICU. However, my son visited me three or four times a day while following all government precautions. On the third or fourth day, I was transferred to a better hospital and placed on a ventilator with 100 percent oxygen support. My lungs were severely damaged, and the doctors told my family that there was almost no chance that I would survive. Remdesivir was arranged through political contacts, but there was no improvement. Tocilizumab was also given, again without improvement. The doctors continued trying everything they could. The hospital owner knew and respected me. He told my family and my factory staff that I probably had only one to one and a half days left to live while on the ventilator. My wife, Manish, continued to have complete faith. She said, "Nothing will happen to Pulin. My God will save him." My family changed doctors and brought in a critical care specialist. A friend arranged plasma treatment. The first dose produced no improvement. After the second dose, I tested negative for COVID, but my lungs remained completely damaged. My son, cousin, and other family members showed my reports to specialists in India, Mumbai, London, and New York. The response was the same: the treatment was excellent, but they saw virtually no chance of survival. At one point, some neighbors privately discussed telling my wife and son that they should remove me from the ventilator because the hospital bill was approximately 1.5 lakh rupees per day. They could not bring themselves to say this to my family. Once, a doctor told my son that I had only about half an hour left to live. My son waited, but I did not die. The hospital owner, who is a Brahmin, advised my son to take me home because he believed I would die very soon. He explained that if I died in the hospital under COVID protocols, my body would be taken directly for cremation and the family would not be able to perform the usual religious rituals. My son refused to take me home. The doctors wanted to determine whether my brain was still functioning, so they arranged an MRI and CT scan. I had to be temporarily removed from the ventilator for the transfer. My oxygen level fell drastically, but I survived. The scans showed that my brain was functioning. Although I was in a coma, I later remembered some of the movement associated with these procedures. I was eventually transferred again to a non-COVID hospital while still in a coma. Days passed without improvement. One doctor told my son, "When a doctor says there is a 50 percent chance, it really means there is no chance. If there is a real chance, the doctor says 51 percent. Your father has about a 0.5 percent chance." The doctors also warned my family that even if I survived, my brain, kidneys, or liver might fail because I had been receiving strong medications, including fentanyl and steroids, and had remained on a ventilator for such a long time. Altogether, I was hospitalized for 40 days. At first, I was ventilated through my mouth. Later, large lines were placed into one side of my neck and then the other. Eventually, a tracheostomy was performed and ventilation continued through an opening in my throat. Although I was unconscious, I remember seeing parts of these procedures. I remember seeing blood around my throat. At times, my blood pressure reportedly rose as high as 285 and later dropped as low as 35 after injections. During these 40 days, I believe that I died twice. The first time, I experienced someone coming toward me with a battle axe. Just as the weapon was about to strike my throat, someone suddenly pulled me away and threw me far from the scene. I then found myself in a sailboat. I have always been a strong believer in Vahanvati Mataji of Ralej, Khambhat. Mataji is traditionally associated with giving safe passage to sailboats. I was later told that during this episode, the ventilator line became straight and the staff believed I had died. According to what I was told, I remained that way for more than two hours. Because this occurred during the COVID period, the ICU staff did not react with the kind of panic that might normally occur. Deaths were frequent. The staff disconnected the equipment and left my body on the bed. Later, they brought a black plastic body bag in accordance with COVID procedures. One hospital attendant who knew my son and knew that I was close to the hospital owner apparently became concerned about what he would tell my son. He rubbed my body and felt signs that I was still alive. The ventilator was reconnected, and I survived. The second major experience happened on August 9, which is my birthday. I found myself standing in the Garbh Grih, the inner sanctuary, of the temple of Vahanvati Mataji in Ralej. Several children from my family were there wearing traditional clothing. They were asking me not to go and telling me to come back home. I told them, "I don't know how I came here, and I don't know how to go back. I have to go to heaven." One child told me, "Manisha Aunty has come to take you back." I walked out onto the veranda and saw my wife arriving in a chauffeur-driven car. She was wearing a beautiful sari and walking toward the temple. I went back into the Garbh Grih and began praying to Mataji. Then I had an extraordinary spiritual experience. The murti of Mataji smiled at me. She extended her hand, touched my shoulder, and gently pushed me. The next moment, I found myself back in my hospital bed. I woke after approximately 39 days. My bed was positioned in front of the doctors' desk. A nurse noticed that I was awake and said, "It is five o'clock in the morning. Why have you awakened? Please sleep." I put my head back on the pillow. Medication was given, and I again became unconscious. At approximately the same time, my wife was at home preparing for her morning prayers. She later told me that she saw a Prakash Punj, a mass or beam of light, moving from the direction of the temple toward the hospital. I believe this was the second time that I returned to life. Until the previous evening, after approximately 38 days of hospitalization, my daily blood tests had shown no meaningful improvement and I still required 100 percent oxygen support. On August 9 at about 11:00 a.m., however, my reports finally showed improvement. The doctors smiled and told my family that if the improvement continued, I might need another 30 to 45 days in the ICU, but I might survive. That evening, my son came to see me and stayed for approximately two hours. The staff had been gradually reducing my oxygen support by about 10 percent every two hours. By around 9:00 p.m., the support had been reduced to 50 percent. My son asked the staff to reduce it another 10 percent. They initially refused because 50 percent was considered a critical point. My son accepted responsibility and insisted. The support was reduced to 40 percent. After he left at about 11:00 p.m., the staff continued reducing the oxygen support by approximately 10 percent every two hours. By about 6:00 the next morning, I was completely without oxygen support. The ventilator was removed. When I became conscious, I could see many needles and lines attached to my body, but I noticed that the major breathing connection was no longer there. At that time, I did not understand that the ventilator had already been removed. During the coma, I also had many experiences in which I seemed to observe events occurring around me and elsewhere. For example, I saw two policemen repeatedly checking on a prisoner who was a patient in the hospital. After I recovered, my wife confirmed that a prisoner had been admitted and that police officers came approximately every two hours. The prisoner died several days before I regained consciousness. I also saw two Jain monks visiting another patient after that patient had been moved from a bed near mine. They were reciting the Navkar Mantra and performing religious rituals. Afterward, I asked my wife about this. She confirmed that there had been a wealthy patient receiving special attention from the hospital owner. The patient died five or six days before I became conscious. I told my wife that I knew the family was wealthy because I had seen the man's wife wearing diamond bangles. The doctors told me that this should have been impossible because I had been continuously sedated. They said that if I moved, I was given additional fentanyl, and that my eyes should not have been open. I also remember seeing doctors and nurses celebrating a birthday inside the ICU during the night. At another time, I seemed to come home and saw newspapers from approximately 15 to 20 days lying in the passageway. My wife later confirmed that because of the stress surrounding my illness, she had not been collecting or organizing the newspapers. I also saw my wife sitting outside the ICU every day. She wore the same clothing repeatedly because she was so distressed that she did not care about changing clothes. I remember trying to touch her several times, although she could not feel me. Afterward, I described the clothing to her, and she confirmed that I was correct. During my hospitalization, my wife arranged religious ceremonies and prayers through our Kul Purohit. These included an eleven-day Maha Mrityunjay Yagn and other ceremonies performed in temples. My daughter also remained at home continuously praying and performing jaap. Several people performed Reiki for me during this period, although my family did not observe any obvious improvement connected with it. During the coma, I also saw Shankar and Parvati dancing in the form of Natraj. I saw a Shiva lingam in a temple surrounded by flowers. I had never seen this temple before. After I recovered, I later visited the Bhimashankar Temple in Guwahati. I felt that the Shiva lingam and temple were the same ones I had seen during my coma. I also repeatedly saw what appeared to be a temple to the left side of my hospital bed, with a diya burning continuously. Approximately one and a half years after my recovery, I asked my doctor if I could visit him and thank him. He agreed. I went to the hospital with my wife, and he called members of the staff together and introduced me by saying, "This is Pulin Purohit." He told me that I was the only patient he knew who had survived after such a prolonged coma under those circumstances. He also said that he did not feel entitled to accept my thanks because he himself could not explain how I survived. He told me that if his treatment alone had been responsible, he should have been able to save the other patients being treated with me, yet those patients had died within approximately eight to ten days. He described my recovery as a miracle and said that there appeared to be some spiritual element involved. He expressed interest in publishing my case in an international medical journal, but I declined. The doctors had previously warned my family that if I survived, my brain, liver, kidneys, or other organs might fail. To their surprise, my organs continued functioning. My doctor told me, "Spiritual science starts where medical science ends." When I finally returned home, my weight had fallen from approximately 95 kilograms to 40 kilograms. Over time, I noticed several other physical changes. My diabetes seemed to be gone. My eyesight became clear enough that I no longer needed glasses. A longstanding knee problem for which I had worn a support belt improved. My hair, which had fallen out because of medication, eventually grew back. During the coma, I also felt that I saw the past, present, and future. I saw friends with whom I had once socialized celebrating my death and saying, "Poly is gone. Cheers." I also saw events that I believed would happen in my future. Some of those events, in my view, have since happened exactly as I saw them. I also felt that my future would eventually become very bright and prosperous. I am deeply grateful to my wife, my son, and my daughter. I believe that spirituality saved my life.
