Experience Description

I was very disturbed and depressed about my life. My heart hurt, and I felt that the only way to eliminate my pain was to plunge a knife into my heart. My intention was not necessarily to end my life. I wanted to end the pain.

In the middle of the night, I went into my kitchen, grabbed a butcher knife, and held it against my chest. At that moment, I thought about my son and decided to stop. I feel that I was very close to death.

I returned to my living room and sat on the couch. I told myself that I could either continue focusing on everything that was wrong in my life or begin thinking about what was good and still working. I closed my eyes and forced myself to concentrate on the positive things in my life.

As I was repeating those good things to myself, the room seemed to become very dark. In the darkness, I could see a tiny pinprick of light. I felt as though I were inside a tunnel, and I knew that I needed to get closer to that light.

I began moving toward it.

The closer I came to the light, the more aware I became. My consciousness and awareness seemed much greater than they were in ordinary life.

The light was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was incredibly bright and indescribably beautiful. As I came closer, the light seemed to radiate around me.

I felt completely peaceful and deeply comforted. I also felt an overwhelming sense of unconditional love. In the light, I knew that I was perfect and that I was loved exactly as I was.

There was communication, but I did not hear spoken words. It was as though I were communicating directly with another presence, soul to soul.

I wanted desperately to continue to the end of the tunnel and enter the light. I would have given anything to go farther.

I reached what seemed to be a final boundary or last step into the light, but I was not permitted to cross it.

I was told, without hearing an audible voice, “You’ve seen everything you need to see.”

I understood that I needed to return.

At the time, I experienced the presence within the light as something mystical and unearthly. I now believe that the light was God and that what I had been shown was heaven.

During the experience, I was left with three pieces of knowledge that felt absolutely clear to me. I understood that what I had seen was heaven and that I would never need to be afraid of dying. I knew that I was loved unconditionally exactly as I was. I also understood that God had placed many religions on Earth as different paths to Him.

I felt that the amazing light somehow contained everyone. I also understood that God is love. Along with these realizations came a powerful feeling of humanity and love for one another.

Before this experience, I had been raised in a nonreligious home. My parents did not believe in God, and I had never seriously questioned what I had been taught. What happened to me was completely inconsistent with my beliefs at the time.

I remember wondering afterward, “Why me? A nonbeliever?”

When I opened my eyes, it seemed that no time had passed.

The experience has remained extraordinarily clear to me. Even thirty-eight years later, I remember it more vividly than many ordinary events from that period of my life.

The unconditional love is the part that remains most meaningful to me. It is almost impossible to explain what it felt like to have that love wash over me.

The experience changed my life profoundly. I came to believe in God, and that belief became a core part of my life. I eventually joined a church and came to believe that Jesus was here to show us a way to live.

I also became calmer, happier, more accepting of other people, and more forgiving of both myself and others.

For some time, I was uncomfortable talking about what had happened. I wrote the experience down immediately, but I did not begin sharing it openly until several years later.

I once told a psychiatrist about it, and he asked whether I often heard voices.

That still makes me laugh.

Nothing else in my life has ever reproduced any part of this experience.

To this day, I believe it was real.

It still feeds my soul.
