Experience Description

My sister, who was my closest sibling, had passed unexpectedly in September 1992, leaving her 3-year-old son an orphan. My two sons and I were living with our mom at the time. Our mom got legal guardianship of my sister's son, but since she worked out of town all week, I provided most of my nephew's care.

I met my boyfriend, who would later become my second husband, in January of 1993. Later that year, I found myself pregnant. Sometime during my third month of pregnancy, I scheduled an appointment with my former OB doctor, but the office wasn't able to get me in to see him until my fourth month. In the latter part of my third month, I started to miscarry. We were about 75 miles from the hospital where my OB doctor worked. By the time I got to the hospital and checked in, I had started hemorrhaging. They put me in a room, and my boyfriend at the time stayed with me while the hospital staff tried to locate an OB/GYN.

As time went on, I grew weaker and continued to lose blood. Suddenly there was a bigger gush than before, and I told my boyfriend that if something wasn't done soon, I was going to die. Right about this time, my eyes rolled back into my head, and he jumped up and went to find a nurse. When he came back with a nurse, she lifted my blanket to take a look and said, "Oh my God," then ran out of the room. Shortly after this, a male anesthesiologist entered the room along with a woman. He had come to ask me why, when I checked in, I had indicated that I didn't want a transfusion if it was thought I might need one. At the time, HIV/AIDS was still a concern, and I let him know that I was worried about receiving infected blood. He then proceeded to argue with me, informing me that I had lost a lot of blood, that I most likely would need a transfusion, and that I might die if I didn't have one. I still refused to sign the paper. My boyfriend then got up and said he was going to call my mom, and the last thing I wanted was to get my mom upset about this. I then agreed to sign the paper with the stipulation that I would only agree to a transfusion if it was a life or death emergency. Shortly after this, the orderlies came to get me and wheeled me out of the room. The last thing I remember is being pushed through a set of double doors, and then it was lights out.

I don't know if I was unconscious, if I had passed, or if I was on the verge of passing, but the next thing I knew, I felt like I was lying on my back and speeding down a dark tunnel toward a bright yellow light far off in the distance. I felt complete peace. Then suddenly I heard the voice of my deceased sister yell out, "No, you can't take her yet. Someone needs to take care of the kids!" It seemed like I came to an immediate stop.

The next thing I knew, I was floating upright in a room, high up against the wall. I was looking downward across the room at what I then realized was my unconscious human self on a gurney, with a nurse standing on each side of me. The nurses were frantically slapping my cheeks and telling me to wake up while my transparent self hovered above and across the room, watching and laughing. My human form continued to lie still on the gurney until one of the nurses said, "You need to wake up. Your husband has been calling down here, and he's very worried about you." Upon hearing the phrase "calling down here," my eyes flew open as I thought I had died and gone to hell. As I took in my surroundings, boxes and unfinished wallboard, I started to panic and asked, "Where am I?" They both chuckled, and one of them told me that I was in the basement of the hospital. I then asked, "What is all of this?" as I looked around. The nurse then told me that they were using the basement as a temporary recovery area while they were renovating upstairs.

Once I was out of recovery and back in my room, the same anesthesiologist I had seen earlier came to see me. With the utmost expression of pure seriousness on his face, he told me, "You know we almost lost you. It was touch and go there for a bit."

Considering all that happened, I truly think I died that day, but they were able to bring me back.
