Experience Description

I was in an abusive relationship and struggling with a crippling meth addiction. My boyfriend and I were arguing about something. We were in the back of his car at our spot getting high, per usual, and he began to choke me out in a rear naked chokehold.

I lost consciousness after a while. While I was unconscious, it was like I opened my eyes in complete darkness. I wasn't afraid. I was confused. I was just there. Then I saw a circular shape of bright yellow tinted light, and at the center was my Papa. My Papa hadn't passed away yet, but he was living with dementia and would die two years or so after this event. My Papa reached for me, and then I came to.

I sat up swiftly and gasped for air at the same time. My boyfriend informed me that I had just had a seizure after I went out. I was confused because it was like I was here in the physical realm, and then at the snap of a finger I was out. I was confused and concerned as to why I saw my Papa.

My boyfriend at the time was strangling me in a rear naked choke until I lost consciousness and then subsequently had a seizure.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Both pleasant AND distressing

Did you feel separated from your body? I lost awareness of my body

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? I was high on crystal meth, but the experience itself seemed to sober me fast, so afterward.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness? Normal consciousness and alertness

Were your thoughts speeded up? No

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning
I'm not sure how long my seizure lasted after my boyfriend choked me out, but when I went to sleep, it felt like it happened in an instant. Then during my experience, time didn't matter, and when I woke up, it felt as though everything happened in a quick flash.

Were your senses more vivid than usual? More vivid than usual

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience During the experience, when I saw my papa, I saw him as clearly as someone sitting across the table from me.

Did you seem to be aware of things going on elsewhere? No

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? Yes
My papa was reaching for me through the orb of light when I leaned forward, so to speak. That's when I regained consciousness and abruptly sat up and gasped for air.

Did you see any beings in your experience? No

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased beings? Yes
It was my papa, who had not passed yet, although he was living with dementia and would go on to pass away within the next year or so.

Did you see or feel surrounded by a brilliant light? An unusually bright light

Did you see an unearthly light? Yes
It was so bright that you'd think it would be blinding, but it wasn't. It was just beautiful.

Did you seem to enter another world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm
At first it was complete darkness, nothingness, and then there was a light.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? At peace, content, tranquil

Did you have a feeling of peace or pleasantness? Incredible peace or pleasantness

Did you have a feeling of joy? Happiness

Did you feel a sense of harmony or unity with the universe? I felt no longer in conflict with nature

I'm not sure if that's what the darkness or nothingness was.

Did you come to a border or point of no return? I came to a definite conscious decision to return to life
My papa was reaching for me. I leaned into the light, and then I came to.

I grew up in a Christian church but at the time I considered myself spiritual, not Christian.

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was both consistent and not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience
My papa was still living, so it was confusing how his spirit could have been there to save me.

That peace and tranquility I felt can only be described as God.

Papa wanted me to make it back home, and that's why he pulled me out.

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Slight changes in my life
It wasn't directly after this experience, but months later after a serious suicide attempt where I was on life support for 3 days, I began to come to know God and His love, surrender to His will, and try to devote myself to Him.

Was the experience difficult to express in words? No

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience
I can still picture what I saw during my experience. I was using meth heavily at the time and I was consistently sleep deprived. So other memories from the time are jumbled up and blurry, but the vision I saw is very clear.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? No

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? The violence. I can't forget about the violence I was enduring so frequently at the time, before, during, and after my experience. I feel like getting choked out should've scared me more. This experience was the first time he put me to sleep, and it happened a few times afterwards. But this was the only time something supernatural happened that I could remember.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes
I told my boyfriend what I saw soon after I came to. He didn't really care, didn't have much to say. I told my aunt and she was concerned about papa passing away soon.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? Yes
I had heard of them from car accidents or what have you.

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely real
I know what I saw, I know what I felt, and it is real to me.

During my last suicide attempt, something similar happened before I came to in the ICU.
