Experience Description

I was diagnosed with stage four cancer when I was age of 26, in 2006. I had chemotherapy, radiation, and a radical hysterectomy. After my third round of chemo, I got very sick and started vomiting for the first time during my treatment. I went to the emergency room and was kept there for eight hours as they tried to bring my fever down while I continued to vomit. The nurse on staff kept me there because she knew this was not a normal symptom for me. She insisted the doctor order a blood culture. After eight hours they sent me home. The results of the blood culture should not have come back for 48 hours, but the next morning they called and told me I had an infection. I went back to the hospital. As I entered my room, I told my nurse that my heart had started to hurt. They laid me down on the bed and put a blood pressure cuff on me. I looked to my left and saw that my blood pressure was 40/20 before I blacked out.

The first image I had was of me being on a bus with no seats in the middle. The bus seemed to be going very fast with trees and other things flying past the window. I looked to my left and saw my grandfather sitting at the back. He had passed away five years earlier. He was wearing the clothes he typically wore, holding his cane, and looking out the window. Then everything went black again as I went unconscious.

The next vision I had was the same thing with a bus going fast and trees flying by. To my left, at the end of the bus, was my grandfather again. He was still holding his cane and looking out the window. But this time, he was wearing hospital clothes. The vision went black again.

When I woke up, there were a number of doctors and nurses standing around me in the intensive care unit (ICU). I remember waking up from that vision, thinking that it felt like the best nap I had ever taken. When I saw the nurses and doctors over me, I felt so much at peace. I said, "Hello, everyone." The sepsis was so severe that they had to put me on a ventilator, and they did not think I would make it through the night.
