Experience Description My death experience is kind of burned into my brain even though it's been over 60 years since it happened. I'm going to go into some significant details as I feel this is important to my story. It started with where we lived at that time. The year was 1959; no cell phones and only 2 doctors in town. The weather was cloudy with occasional showers. We lived in rural Arlington, Texas. Arlington is a city today that has over 300,000 people, but at one time had less than 10,000. We lived at least 5 miles north of the town. The road that ran in front of our home, that was an old, converted barn. About a mile down the street was an old feed store. My mother was a chain smoker and at the time she was separated from my father. She ran out of cigarettes from time to time and sent me on my bicycle to the feed store to pick her up a pack. The feed store had a dog that just had a litter of puppies. When I went to the store, I would play with the puppies. The highway was a two-lane asphalt with a gravel side. The store was on the opposite side of the street from our house. I would pedal south with the traffic. I would ride usually on the asphalt road until I noticed a car coming. Then, I would go to the right to get off the road. The day that I was hit, I had moved off the road onto the gravel to wait for the traffic to go by. One of the dog's puppies saw me and came running across the highway. A woman driving a new Cadillac slammed on the brakes and stopped before hitting the puppy. I was so relieved and then all the lights went out. The next thing I remember was hovering over my body and looking down. There were at least 10-15 people standing around me with some of the women crying. I wondered where all of those people had come from. This lasted for a short time to me. Then, I entered the most beautiful "place" I have ever been in or seen. There were blue, shimmering lights and the feelings of peace were unbelievable. I did not want to leave. I had never felt anything like this in my life. In my brain I asked where I was. The answer came back, but it was not what I expected. The voice came to me and said, "Kip, it's not your time". Then I flew back into my body. I was aware of looking up and seeing clouds. I heard several gasps from the people surrounding me and I sat up. I was then helped up. No broken bones or injury of any kind. Everyone called it a miracle. What happened was a pickup truck following behind the Cadillac could not stop, so it swerved to the right and hit me. The impact bent the back wheel to the front of the front wheel. I went flying in the air for approximately 30-40 feet. According to the onlookers I was out or dead for at least an hour. Because of the rain the ditch next to the road was slightly full of water and the ground was soft. I flew across the ditch and landed on the other side. I'm sure that contributed to me not breaking any bones. My lace-up tennis shoes were on the ground where I was standing. They said I had no pulse and was not breathing. Someone had already told my mother that I was involved in an accident and that I did not survive. When I finally got back home, she was in hysterics. I had absolutely no pain until the next day when I woke up and could not move. I was so sore. At this time in that era you did not complain about much of anything. You were raised to be a man and count your blessings; even at 12 years old. I got up and went to school. I told no one what had happened to me, nor what I was told when dead. I knew I was here on Earth with a purpose to help people. I was afraid of being judged as a quack. Fast forward 10 years later. I was in the middle of college pursuing a degree in Pre-Med-Den. Nobody in my family ever went to Medical or Dental school, but I knew this was what God wanted. When I started to read about other people who had similar experiences, it all started to make sense. The odds of getting into medical or dental school at that time were really slim, but I knew this was God's plan. The college I went to detailed the odds on the first day. There were about 1000 Pre-Med-Den students in the Freshman starting class. The college advisor said only 100 would graduate and of the 100, only 10 would get in to either Med or Den school. He was right. I will not go into details, but I chose to go to Dental School even though I was recruited by the cardiac surgical team at Southwestern Medical school to become a thoracic surgeon. I graduated in 1975 from Dental school in 1977 from a 2-year GP residency; and in 1980 from a 3-year Periodontics residency. I served in the USAF for 11 years. In 1984 my wife and I started a private practice in a small community, population about 15,000 (now 150,000). I retired in 2025 after serving 50 years in practice. I have shared my story of "the other side" with hundreds of patients, especially those who have lost a loved one. They are always grateful. I estimate I have touched over 150,000 people in my life of service. I pray that it is enough.
