Experience Description

I experienced a pulmonary embolism two days after surgery. I was at home and suddenly felt lightheaded, fainted, and fell to the ground. Paramedics were called and I was rushed to the emergency room via ambulance. While in the ambulance, I "coded." My heart and breathing stopped for about a minute and was revived via CPR. Once at the hospital, I coded again for 35 minutes. I was revived and remained heavily sedated with a breathing tube for two days. Initially, I did not remember anything during this time.

Months later, I was describing a sensation I had during this time to my mother, who was present when my experience happened. It was a feeling of being out of my body; possibly above it, but I was not a person or in a person shape. There was a beautiful yellow and orange light everywhere, much like the sun but softer. I felt enveloped in warmth and there was no sense of time or space. I had a feeling of absolute acceptance and unconditional love. It was the freest I have ever felt. The feeling was so beautiful and nothing like I could feel on earth.

I told my mother it must have been when they brought me outside on the stretcher, and the sunlight was hitting my face. She reminded me that morning was overcast with torrential rain. It was at that moment, that I realized this was a near death experience and I had visited the other side. I used to have a huge, almost overwhelming fear of death. I do not feel that anymore.
