Experience Description

It was a very hot day in July. I was riding my bike when I decided to stop at the mall to get a bottle of water. My breathing was labored but bearable. As soon as I entered the McDonald’s, the first thing I noticed was the air conditioning was blasting. I started sweating and breathing heavily, but was still conscious.

I approached the self-order screen and began pressing it, but it wasn’t working. I grew agitated but tried to stay calm. I continued to press the button, but it still didn't work. I turned my head to the left, vaguely remembering a guy in front of me. Then everything went dark. I fainted and collapsed to the ground.

Before I fell, I felt my senses shutting down. There was no touch or no taste. The sounds around me disappeared. I didn’t feel myself closing my eyes or seeing complete darkness. Suddenly, I didn’t even feel the fall. When I regained consciousness, I was lying on the floor with a nurse by my side who was trying to wake me up. She told me I had been unconscious for about 30 minutes, that my lips were purple, my complexion had turned pale, I was cold, and she couldn’t detect a pulse.

During the time I was unconscious, I had an experience. I found myself in a white and gray hallway. I was positioned on the right side. To my left side was another hallway, with a line of motionless people in the middle as the line turned right. They were women, men, and young people. I stood still and watched them. One guy turned to look straight into my eyes. He gave me a vacant look, like he was mentally not there.

I remember thinking, "I don’t understand why I’m here." I’m not religious, and I never have been. Yet, the main feeling was that I was in purgatory, waiting in line without knowing why. It was like I had something unresolved to do or say.

There were no emotions. The people in line seemed resigned; some with their heads down.

Something has changed in my life since then. I’ve developed the ability to distinguish dreams from memories, and I can say with certainty that this wasn’t a dream. It was too vivid and too strange. My experience was filled with silent resignation and regret. And the people there looked at me with a sense of pity.
