Experience Description I didn't care whether I lived or died. At that time, I carried deep wounds from abusive relationships, mental health struggles, and a heroin and fentanyl addiction. I had a hard time staying sober for any length of time, but I had been clean for about a month after getting out of jail. A "friend" was staying with me then. He went with me to buy a bag of heroin. I did one shot in the car, and I don't remember the ride home. He woke me up in the parking lot. Somehow I was in the back seat, and I was confused about how I had gotten there. I remember going upstairs to my apartment with him. Before I used again, I told him, "If anything happens, I have Narcan on my fridge." Looking back, it felt as though my soul already knew I was about to die and come back. I did another shot. Then my whole world went black. I was overwhelmed by a feeling of pure love, peace, and euphoria. Then a brilliant light surrounded me. It was over me, through me, within me, and all around me. On the other side, you are no longer physical. You exist only as spirit. People often say that when you die, your life flashes before your eyes. That wasn't my experience. Instead, I experienced my past, present, and future all at once. It seemed to happen in less than a millisecond of earthly time. I simply was everything. I felt everything. I just existed. It's difficult to put into words. Then I suddenly shot back into my body. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. I saw my so-called friend on the floor, frantically trying to figure out whether he had saved me. I tried to stand, but my body had been without oxygen for too long to support itself. As soon as I stood up, I collapsed. The next thing I remember is standing naked in a cold shower. I vomited, then blacked out again. When I woke up, I was already 30 minutes late for my serving shift. I got fired. I yelled, "F@#$!" Then that same "friend" walked in and called me "babe." He took advantage of me at one of the lowest moments of my life. He claimed I had been coherent and told me we had slept together four times. I have absolutely no memory of any of it. Looking back, I believe God's redirection was actually God's protection. After that, I ended up back in jail a few more times. I no longer wanted to use heroin because I was terrified of falling asleep after what had happened during my overdose. Instead, I switched to methamphetamine because I was afraid to sleep. Today, I am grateful to say I have been sober for three and a half years. For a long time, I was angry at God, Source, or whatever name you choose to use. I was angry that I had been brought back because what I experienced on the other side was more beautiful and peaceful than anything I had ever known. Now I understand that I came back for a reason. Today I work at a rehabilitation center, where I help people struggling with addiction discover their own worth, self-love, and inner light. Every day I have the privilege of reminding my clients that they matter and that recovery is possible. The truth is, they help me just as much as I help them. It is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
