Experience Description During a medical emergency, the author experienced a spontaneous pneumothorax, which is a collapsed lung. Blood accumulated in his chest cavity, and doctors inserted a chest tube to treat the condition. During removal of the chest tube, he entered a severe crisis. His pulse reportedly dropped into the low thirties, suggesting a serious circulatory problem and possible shock. At that moment he experienced a sudden shift in consciousness. He describes the experience as an abrupt transition into a very different state of awareness. He perceived himself moving through a deep blue environment that felt vast and spacious. In the distance he saw an iridescent shimmering light. The space appeared structured and immense, almost like large forms or architecture. He felt as if he were moving through depth toward that light, similar to traveling through a tunnel or passage. His awareness was extremely clear during this state. He reports no panic or confusion. His sense of personal identity faded, yet awareness itself remained present. He describes this as awareness without attachment to his usual sense of self. He also felt detached from his physical body. The detached state felt effortless and smooth. It lacked the friction and heaviness that he associates with normal physical existence. The return to his body occurred suddenly. He describes the return as forceful and uncomfortable. Re-entering the body felt dense and compressed compared with the detached state he had just experienced. The contrast between the two states was striking. The detached state felt light and effortless, while physical existence felt heavy and constrained. He did not report encounters with beings, guides, or deceased individuals. He also did not describe a life review or communication with any entities. The experience consisted mainly of a profound change in the structure of awareness and environment. After the experience, he concluded that continuing to live felt optional rather than automatic. He did not recall making a clear decision to return while he was in the detached state. However, once he returned to normal awareness he felt that remaining alive required a form of ongoing consent. Life felt like something that continues through willingness rather than through simple biological momentum. This realization affected how he views human struggle. He believes that continuing to live during suffering involves real effort. People who persist through pain or difficulty are actively choosing to remain engaged with life. In his view, depression or exhaustion may reflect how difficult it can be to maintain that willingness. The experience left him with the sense that detachment from life is possible and effortless, while living in the physical world requires continuous participation. For him, the central lesson of the experience is that life is not merely something that happens automatically. Instead, he believes that remaining alive involves an ongoing willingness to remain embodied and present in the physical world.
