Experience Description I was around 12 years old. We were on a family holiday, staying in a weathered, old caravan park by the coast. I was the kind of place where the salty wind never really stops blowing and everything smells faintly of seaweed and sunscreen. One afternoon, I borrowed a friend’s surfboard that was dinged and faded with peeling wax. I wasn’t much of a surfer, but the waves looked inviting. Curiosity got the better of me. I paddled out alone. The beach was eerily quiet with the distant chatter of seagulls and the rhythmic crash of water on sand. I’d only been in the water for maybe ten minutes when I caught a small, lazy wave while lying flat on my stomach. I let the wave carry me toward shore. The wave deposited me gently onto the wet sand. I lay there for a moment, catching my breath and feeling the sun on my back. A rogue wave came from nowhere. The wave was, taller and faster than the rest. It slammed into me before I could react. I got pulled underwater several times. All I could see was a blur of green water and foam. At first, I panicked, but then the fear melted away. Everything around me grew strangely quiet. Suddenly, I wasn’t in the ocean anymore. I was somewhere else, inside a distant memory I had forgotten. It felt like the memory belonged to someone else, but it was mine. I could move through the memories. It was as if I could turn through moments, like pages in an old book. Each memory was vivid and alive. I drifted between scenes from a few years earlier; fragments of life I hadn’t thought about in forever. Yet, I wasn’t watching them because I was in them. Time seemed to stretch. I could stay in any memory as long as I wanted. Then, abruptly, the vision shattered. I was back on the beach, coughing and vomiting seawater into the sand. The taste of salt burned my throat. Dizzy, I scrambled to my feet, dazed and shivering. What haunted me wasn’t the wave. It was the strange journey I’d taken. It didn’t feel like a dream. It felt real. I didn’t tell anyone. I just hurried back to the caravan park, heart pounding, unsure of what had just happened and why.
