Experience Description

Being twenty at the time and three months pregnant, I wasn't allowed to receive any normal post-op drugs. I had two tablets every four hours and in a lot of pain.

I went down a a dark helter-skelter tunnel. At the bottom was this beautiful, whiter-than-white space and a feeling of absolute peace. A woman was standing there in a 1940s-style WRAF uniform. She looked a bit like me but wasn't as tall. Her hair was done up in combs in the 1940s style. She told me that "It's not your time yet; you have to go back." So I climbed all the way back up the tunnel, and that's when I started to get better.

I described her to my dad, and he said it sounded just like his sister who died in 1945 when she was twenty and three months pregnant. I have never seen a picture of her, and my dad never talked about her. After that, it was amazing how green the grass and the trees were. The birdsong never sounded so lovely. I no longer fear death, although I wouldn't want it to be long and painful.
