Experience Description

I was hit by a car while riding a motorcycle. A friend behind me witnessed the accident. I crashed headfirst through the windshield. I was thrown back about thirty feet, landing flat on my back. Fortunately, helmet laws were in effect at the time. I remember landing on the pavement and losing consciousness.

I clearly recall looking down at myself, lying in the street from a height of about fifteen feet. I watched this happening without any sense of time; it just was. Suddenly, I was back in my body, like smoke sucked into a vacuum. I was overwhelmed by excruciating pain.

My left leg had a compound fracture, and I just wanted to get up and go home. The paramedics put an air cast on my leg. When they inflated it, I lost consciousness again. I remember fading in and out of consciousness in the back of the ambulance. I was experiencing terrible pain, that I hadn’t felt until I returned to my body. I woke briefly in the emergency room, telling nobody in particular that, "It hurt so badly I wished I were dead." The next morning, I awoke in a hospital room, facing a minimum six-month recovery.

What stands out most about my experience is hovering above myself like a spectator, completely free of pain.
