Experience Description

I had taken some cocaine and dislocated my shoulder in an off-road accident. I went to the hospital to have my shoulder put back in place. They asked me if I had done any drugs that day. Being eighteen and sitting next to my mother, I said "No" because I was scared of getting in trouble. The nurse gave me one shot of etomidate before the procedure. After a few minutes, she and the doctor were baffled that I was still awake and fully coherent. A few minutes later they gave me a second shot. According to my mother, within two minutes my heart stopped and the emergency room staff began to scramble. They began CPR while a nurse went to get a defibrillator. After three minutes of CPR, they switched to the defibrillator. Right before the first attempt, I jolted awake so violently that I headbutted my mother. She was hovering over me crying. I then started laughing at everyone in the room for being so freaked out and told them all to relax and that everything was going to be okay.

What I experienced after the second shot was me drifting slowly up and out of my body. I was turning and looking down at everyone in the room. When I looked at my mother, I felt joy as I kept floating up and out of the room. As I ascended, I could see the hospital, the town, the whole state of Florida, the whole United States, and then the entire world. The farther I got away from earth, the faster I traveled, until I was moving so fast the stars were a blur.

When I came to a sudden stop, I was in a heavenly area and surrounded by extraordinary colors that looked like clouds or flowers. They were so beautiful that I couldn't comprehend them. I looked up and saw an absolutely giant figure, approximately twelve feet tall. He telepathically asked me to come to him. I walked to him and noticed my legs were not moving. Yet, I felt as if I were walking. When I approached him, I could not focus on his facial features. I felt the sheer, comforting power he radiated. He appeared to have wings. The rays of light surrounding him made it difficult to focus on any one feature. Together, we began heading toward something so beautiful I have no words to describe it. He put his hand on my shoulder and explained he was taking me to a place where there was no more pain, fear, or hunger. He welcomed me home.

As we were getting closer to what I believe was heaven, my mother's voice echoed across the universe saying, "You can't die, you're about to have a baby!" so loud it felt like someone hitting a giant church bell inches from my ear. I looked to the giant being and asked him if I was dead. He appeared to smile, nodded his head, and turned away. As he was turning, he blessed me with what I can only describe as an information download. In a nanosecond, I instantly knew all of humanity worldwide is one and that we are all children of the same God. I was then pulled downward ten times faster than I had ascended. I was moving so fast that I only saw a glimpse of the earth before hitting my body. I jolted upright in the hospital bed.

My heart had stopped for three minutes and thirty-three seconds. While "dead," time did not exist to me. My experience felt much longer than three and a half minutes. Once back, I could remember my experience in vivid detail. To this day, twenty years later, it is the most real, crystal clear memory I have. I remember it better than what I did yesterday. I am very grateful for my experience. I look forward to meeting that giant being again one day. I now believe is an angel. Until that day comes, I will continue to do what we were put here to do - a good person to your fellow man.

Did you feel separated from your body? I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? While walking with my angel. Before was confusing; after was euphoria.
It was as if any questions I once had I knew the answers to without being told the answers. There was no questioning anything like there is in my day-to-day life.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness? More consciousness and alertness than normal

Were your thoughts speeded up? Incredibly fast

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning
Time was non-existent.

Were your senses more vivid than usual? Incredibly more vivid

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience Familiar objects such as my mother, the hospital, and the planet appeared. I could see farther, wider, and more clearly. Everything in the heavens was very bright, radiant, and somewhat hard to focus on, like stepping out of a pitch-black room into sunlight.

Did you seem to be aware of things going on elsewhere? No

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? Uncertain
While traveling up and back down, the speeds blurred everything into a kind of tunnel appearance, but it did not feel like a tunnel. It felt huge and vast.

Did you see any beings in your experience? I sensed their presence

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased beings? No

Did you see or feel surrounded by a brilliant light? A light clearly of mystical or other-worldly origin

Did you see an unearthly light? Yes
The best I can describe it is as a very bright white with pinks and yellows, but they were lights and colors from a spectrum I had never seen.

Did you seem to enter another world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm
A place of giant, vast beauty where it felt as if anywhere I wanted to go, I could freely roam. It felt as if there was everything found on earth, such as mountains, rivers, seas, and towns, but all on a much grander scale.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Euphoria, joy, and the incredible knowledge that I was okay.

I learned so much in such a short time that 20 years later, I am still researching the things I learned in that 3 minutes and 33 seconds while my heart was stopped.

My angel was leading me towards an enormous area that could be described as a border.

Did you come to a border or point of no return? I came to a barrier that I was not permitted to cross; or was sent back against my will
As we got closer to what looked like a mountain-sized cloud wall, my mother's voice told me I could not die, and I was sent back to my body. I was given no choice, which I believe was because my first son was born 23 days after my experience. I was sent back to raise him and his brother.

God, Spiritual and Religion:

What was your religion prior to your experience? Other or several faiths
My mother was a self-proclaimed pagan hippie, and my father came from a strong Christian background; his family members owned churches. I found myself right in the middle, confused about which direction to go.

Have your religious practices changed? Yes
I now study all religions and do not hold myself to just one. I worship no man because God is much greater than any man could ever be.

What is your religion now? Other faiths - New age
I believe there is one God who has shown himself as many different gods around the world, for people in certain geographical locations to understand him and his words. I also believe the devil is very real, and his synagogues where children are sacrificed are proof. The children of God are not capable of such evil doings. Good versus evil is very real and very old. All humans worldwide with true internal love for all of humanity are connected as one.

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was both consistent and not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience
I was 18 and very confused about religion and the afterlife. At the time I had no idea what to believe. Something in me did know there was a God, but between all the religions of the world I didn't know who to listen to or believe.

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? Yes
I value human life much more. Our time on earth is short, and we all deserve God's gift of life, and we must treat each other accordingly.

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice? I encountered a definite being, or a voice clearly of mystical or unearthly origin
A giant man twice my height (approximately 12 feet tall) who appeared to have wings. When he spoke to me, I heard him inside my head in a very deep, comforting voice.

Did you encounter or become aware of any beings who previously lived on earth who are described by name in religions (for example: Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.)? Yes
I was informed that Jesus, Muhammad, and Buddha are all messengers of the same God.

During your experience, did you gain information about premortal existence? Uncertain
When I was three, I told my mother that in a previous life I had been a machinist who was killed at work, and that I went and lived in heaven for a period of time before deciding to come be with her. She told me this immediately after my NDE, and while she was telling me, something in me already knew that the story I had told her was the truth. While she was telling me, I already knew every next word she was going to say.

During your experience, did you gain information about universal connection or oneness? Yes
Yes, all of God's children come home to the same place. There is also another place where the devil's children go.

During your experience, did you gain information about the existence of God? Yes
Without being told, I knew there is one God who is watching over all of humanity.

Concerning our Earthly lives other than Religion:

During your experience, did you gain special knowledge or information about your purpose? Uncertain
I believe I learned things all of us know and feel inside but can't quite grasp; they were amplified for me and helped me get over my fear of learning and asking questions about life's uncomfortable topics. Since my experience, I am an open book who will throw himself into any situation completely unafraid of the outcome. I have been in management and have trained and supervised hundreds of men in the well drilling and directional drilling fields. Men come to me to talk, and often I hear 'I don't know why I'm telling you this,' and I somehow always have the exact words they are looking for. Ever since my experience, I have become like a magnet for the fearful to help give them the strength they are searching for, and to this day, twenty years later, I am amazed at how the answers to their questions flow out of my mouth without my brain doing any work.

During your experience, did you gain information about the meaning of life? Uncertain
I immediately knew we are here to love one another and to grow as one.

During your experience, did you gain information about an afterlife? Yes
Without being told, I knew that once I crossed the border, I would exist for eternity.

In my experience, I knew and still know that love is the highest. Love is over everything. Love wins no matter what. Everything we do should be in the name of love.

I cannot tolerate destructive individuals in my personal life.

I've been crying the entire time while typing this, trying to put together the words. These are happy tears.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience
I remember my NDE more clearly than I remember yesterday.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes
I feel what people are thinking. I don't have to speak to someone to know what emotions they are feeling. It sometimes becomes very cumbersome. Fortunately, when it becomes heavy on me, I am graced with immeasurable amounts of gratitude and courage to keep fighting the good fight.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? The feeling of my angel putting his hand on my shoulder and taking my consciousness to a higher level of understanding was something that I can still feel as I type this. It is warm and powerful. It was the most meaningful and significant thing that has ever happened to me.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes
Immediately after I came back to my body, I told my mother, the doctor, and all the nurses what I experienced. Since then, I have told many people about my experience when I felt it was time for them to hear it. Everyone I have told has said 'thank you, I needed that' in one way or another. I have watched the hope and love return to their eyes when they felt life was meaningless.

It was the most real thing I had ever experienced.
