Experience Description

While walking to the bus stop one beautiful June morning, I was struck by a car speeding down the road. My pelvis was crushed, and I suffered multiple other fractures and abrasions, along with torn ligaments in my left leg.

I passed out while in the ambulance and went into shock while on the X-ray table. My parents later told me that the doctors had warned them I was probably dying and that they should prepare themselves for the worst.

That night, I was in intensive care with tubes in my arms and down my nose. I remember lying there in the dark and being in excruciating pain.

At one point, I noticed two people standing next to my bed. They were a man and a woman wearing old-fashioned clothing, and they appeared to be in their thirties. I realized they were my grandparents. I had never met my grandfather, and my grandmother had died when I was younger, so I do not know how I knew who they were.

They did not say anything to me. They simply smiled and nodded.

I looked past them and saw a long line of people. The line continued upward into the ceiling and beyond. They were all smiling and nodding at me.

I suddenly realized that they were coming to take me away. I did not feel that they meant me any harm, but I knew I was not going anywhere with them if I could help it.

I started thrashing around in my bed and yelling, "No, no!"

The nurse came over and gave me an injection of something that knocked me out. That is all I remember of that night.

At some point, the internal bleeding stopped, and I recovered after spending a couple of weeks in the hospital.

Now I have to tell you about another strange thing that happened that same night.

My older sister, who is nine years older than I am, was on vacation with her husband when the accident occurred. My mother did not know which hotel they were staying in, so she was unable to call and tell her what had happened. This was before cell phones.

That night, my sister had a nightmare. She said she dreamed that I was drowning in a bathtub filled with blood instead of water. She said I was screaming for help and reaching my arms toward her as I slowly sank into the tub of blood.

She kept stretching and stretching to reach me. At the very last second, just as my head was going under, she grabbed my hand and pulled me out.

She woke up sweating and trembling. She told her husband that they had to leave immediately because something had happened to me. He told her to calm down, that it had only been a dream, and that they were leaving for home the next day anyway.

The following day, they drove to her husband's parents' house to pick up their dog. Her mother-in-law was standing outside waiting for them.

My sister ran up to her and asked, "What happened to my sister?"

Her mother-in-law replied, "How did you know?"

This is all true and can be corroborated.

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience I didn't hear anything. None of them spoke verbally but somehow I knew what they were thinking.

My grandparents and a lot of other people I didn't know.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Fear because they were going to take me someplace and I didn't know where that was.

I was a child and my family never took us to church so I had no real knowledge of religion.

Have your religious practices changed? Yes
At 14 I read the Bible from cover to cover. I studied religions. I went to religious services any chance I got.

What is your religion now? Christian - Protestant
I became very religious after the accident. I asked for a Bible for the Christmas after I almost died. I spent the next 8 years reading about all religions, faiths, etc. before choosing the Lutheran church at the age of 20.

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was entirely not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience
I was young and had never really been exposed to any religious education. I had never really thought about what happened when you die. I was a blank slate for religious knowledge.

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? Yes
I started exploring religious beliefs.

Since the accident, sometimes I dream about people after they die and the dreams are really vivid. I have conversations with the dead person. Really interesting.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? The fact that I was apparently supposed to die but I refused to go.

My family knew immediately because my sister really liked to share her experience. I was not able to share it with people until I was an adult.

Because there were two of us who experienced the trauma, it made it easier for me to accept it was a real experience.
