Experience Description

Early in the morning after having had my right kidney removed the previous day, I was talking to my mother. According to her, I said, 'My lungs are gurgling!' Then alarms started to go off. I coded. Mom said they announced 'Code Blue in Room ???'

Let me give you a little background. I have a bleeding disorder called Von Willebrand's Disease. In order to prevent bleeding to death during surgery, I had been scheduled to receive five units of FFP (fresh frozen plasma) the night before the surgery. There were several mix-ups involving the student nurse, paperwork, etc. This resulted in my not getting the FFP until very early the morning of the surgery. The surgery seemed to have gone without incident. According to my doctor, the 'code' that happened the next day was due to pushing the five units of FFP in much, much faster than they had planned. Then post-op I was given IV antibiotics, TPN (total parenteral nutrition), more blood, etc. Apparently, they overloaded my body with fluids. This forced the excess fluid into my lungs and heart area, which resulted in both respiratory arrest and congestive heart failure.

Let me go back to the account. I don't remember coding at all. My last memory was of talking to my mother. When I re-entered the story, my first impression was one of complete chaos in the room. It was strictly auditory with shouting, commands, and alarms. Next, I became aware of a VERY bright light in the upper left corner of the room. I felt myself being drawn slowly towards that light. I could still hear the chaos behind me, but I don't recall looking down or anything. I was drawn to the light. At this point, I remember realizing that I was dying, and having a 'So this is what it's like!' kind of feeling. However, I also felt an overwhelming sense of sadness for my wife and children who would be left behind.

At this point, I entered the 'light' and found that it seemed to be a tunnel leading somewhere. The light was the brightest white that I had ever seen. As I entered the tunnel, I felt an indescribable sense of warmth, love, peace. I'm not sure how to describe it. The farther I got into the tunnel, the greater the peaceful feeling became. As I approached the 'end' of the tunnel, I could see people waiting to greet me. One of them appeared to be my mother-in-law who had passed away 7 months previously. At this point, my forward progress stopped. Then I started to move slowly backward for a few seconds. My memory of the experience ended at that point.

The next thing that I remember was awakening in ICU several days later. I was intubated with my wrists secured to the rails. Apparently I had started to awake earlier and tried to pull my breathing tube out.
