Experience Description

My friend and I were fixing up a camper van someone had given us. We were priming the engine with gas when there was a backfire through the carborator. The fire quickly made its way to the cup of gas and exploded.

My friend was sitting in the driver's seat while I was in the passenger seat. His window was open and he was on fire, so he jumped out of the window. I tried to open my door but the window was closed and the door was locked. I could not find the door handle or the lock. I was also on fire. The fire was too strong to jump to the driver's side. My life started to flash before my eyes. All I could think about was my 1 year old daughter and 4 year old son.

Then the door opened by itself while I looked at in disbelief, while scrambling out of the truck. In front of me was a tall, large man. He had tan skin, curly black hair and beard. He was wearing a tunic, with a rope for a belt, and leather sandals that had leather straps up his ankles. He looked at me with his head tilted to the side, like I was not supposed to see him. When I looked harder, I noticed I could see through his body to the brick wall behind him.

In that same moment, my friend ran through this man's body. My friend was on fire and trying to roll on the ground to smother the flames. The problem was that the ground was covered in large rocks instead of dirt. I jumped on top of him and put the fire out with my hands and body.

We both stood there, looking at each other. I asked if he saw the man, but he did not. I have told my story hundreds of times at this point and am not sure anyone believed it. I know there is another side now, and I won't ever forget what happened that day.
