Experience Description

When I was 7 years old, I had a death experience, having no preconception of "Afterlife", "God", "Heaven", or even thinking about such things. This replays in my mind more often than I think it should. I am now 50 years old. I still have trouble sharing the incident that caused this or putting the experience into words; this is the best I can do.

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? No. Clinical death (cessation of breathing or heart function or brain function)

How do you consider the content of your experience? Both pleasant AND distressing

The experience included: Out of body experience

Did you feel separated from your body? No I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal It was more. I understood things beyond what I can understand now

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? Always.

Were your thoughts speeded up? Incredibly fast

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning At first time seemed normal, but after a short time, it all happened all once. It was overwhelming.

Were your senses more vivid than usual? Incredibly more vivid

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. There was no vision, just a sense of experience

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. There was no hearing, just a sense of understanding without language

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? No

The experience included: Presence of deceased persons

Did you see any beings in your experience? No

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings? Yes I met my great grandmother who was deceased, my grandmother who was alive, and many others who were all women of my ancestry whom I did not know, but they knew me and cared about what was happening to me.

Did you see, or feel surrounded by, a brilliant light? No

Did you see an unearthly light? Uncertain

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? Some unfamiliar and strange place I can not describe this since there was no body, no vision, and no hearing. It was presence that I could recognize individuals and understand them even in the blackness.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? At first, I was lost and uncomfortable. But when they found me, or realized I was there, I was comforted
