Experience Description

I was giving birth for the first time at age 21. This happened after a diagnosis of infertility and several years of praying for a baby. The pregnancy had been incredibly challenging, several instances of hemorrhaging from subchorionic bleeds and a 50/50 chance of survival for the baby earlier in the pregnancy. Birth was long, and much more physically difficult than my subsequent births have been.

When my body began spontaneously pushing, I experienced the worst pain of my life. I felt a sudden pulling at my chest. Then I felt as if I had left my body and was in the air hovering above and looking down at myself. I remember feeling neutral about this, and strongly thinking, 'I want to hold my baby.'

I entered my body again just as his head emerged. Then I pushed his shoulders out. I have never felt more blissful than when I was back in my body holding my newborn son.

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? Uncertain Childbirth Illness, trauma or other condition not considered life threatening. Childbirth. I felt tremendous pain, but vitals were stable

How do you consider the content of your experience? Both pleasant AND distressing

Did you feel separated from your body? Yes I saw myself surrounded by family and friends and doctors. I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal. Everything was sharper and more detailed

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? All throughout it. It was very brief, perhaps less than a minute.

Were your thoughts speeded up? No

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Time seemed to go faster or slower than usual. Everything felt slower

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? No

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes I shared more after the birth of my second child, because at the time I felt like the experience was a normal part of childbirth. But it seemed more remarkable after my soul so clearly stayed in my body during a subsequent birth.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? Yes I had heard of many NDE experiences, but had never experienced that leaving before. I don't believe it strongly influenced my experience.
