Experience Description

I was age 19 and at an ex-boyfriend's house. He was 21 and his parents were away. I had told my parents that I was staying at a friend's house, so they did not know I was at his house. He had another male friend over. They started drinking beer. I wasn't a huge drinker and didn't have much experience with it being underage. I remember sipping on a beer, more to look cool around them. Later, his friend suggested we smoke pot. I don't remember how much pot we smoked. But between that, not really eating, and the small amount of beer I had, I suddenly felt like I was going to pass out. I was embarrassed, so I stood and tried to steady myself as I wanted walk inside to splash some water on my face. That's the last thing I remember.

I knew I was in complete blackness. I heard a beep noise in my ears and head; almost similar to the sound of something you'd hear from a hospital monitor when someone's heart stops. There also appeared to be a 'whooshing' type noise behind it. All I saw was black. It was as if I was in another place, completely removed from what just happened. I had no concept of my life at all for a few seconds. I also had no awareness of my body at all.

Then, as if I was watching a movie on widescreen, scenes from when I was a young child started flashing by like a screen projector. The blackness was framing these scenes. Although, the only scene I really remember was from the home I grew up in. We hadn't lived there for 13 years. It was as if I was on the sidewalk and looking at the house. My grandmom was sitting on the porch. She was still alive when I had this experience. I barely remember the subsequent scenes, but I remember that they seemed to progress as I aged as a child. Suddenly, the scenes starting flying by so fast that I couldn't make any of them out. They became a complete blur until everything became black again.

I suddenly became aware of my physical body and felt it shaking violently. I also felt a painful pressure in my groin and bladder area, as if my body was fighting against urinating on myself. My head also hurt. I wondered if I was dying. Between the 'life flashing before my eyes,' and it feeling like my body was trying to empty itself, I realized these were two things that can happen if you are dying. Finally, I was able to open my eyes. The whooshing and whirring sound was still there. I was on the couch inside and my ex-boyfriend was shaking me to try to wake me up. (Hence, me feeling my body being shaken). They told me I had dropped like a sack of potatoes and hit my head on the concrete outside. My ex-boyfriend had carried me inside and put me on the couch. I asked him to help me to the bathroom and told him I was okay, but I needed to urinate. But when I got to the bathroom, I couldn't. So I splashed water on my face and went back out. He gave me some ice water and I just sat there for a while. By the time we went to bed, I felt fine. My head barely hurt, and I believe he gave me Advil or something to take. I probably should've been concerned about going to sleep, since I most likely had a concussion. But I went to sleep anyway. I woke up normal and was completely fine the next day.

I probably had a concussion, but nothing ever came of it. Not an overdose, but drugs and alcohol played a role in my experience.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Neither pleasant NOR distressing

Did you feel separated from your body? No I lost awareness of my body

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? Normal consciousness and alertness N/A

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. No difference

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. I have had multiple issues with loud beeps and noises since this time. Also, any low grade background technological background noises like large office equipment buzzing lowly makes me feel physically sick. I also almost passed out a couple of years ago in a convenience store when a cooking appliance in the store was making a very similar long beep to what I experienced. It instantly triggered me. I tried to ignore it, but then realized I was about to pass out. I rushed to the bathroom and by the time I got to the door, I was already seeing black. I barely made it to the sink in the bathroom, but luckily stopped myself from passing out.

I feel physically affected by all sorts of sounds now. It has happened since and I have had to literally run out of stores if I hear something like that. My husband is aware of my issue, as I told him what happened at the convenience store, but he does not know where it originated from. I only told him about how suddenly noises make me feel sick or about to pass out and we have to be cautious if something like that occurs in public.

Even a low rumbling from outside (someone in the neighborhood running some type of machine) can really affect me and irritate me and make me feel physically uncomfortable. Also, if multiple noises are heard (for example, say music is playing overhead somewhere, but then someone else plays a video on their phone at the same time), it becomes like nails on a chalkboard for me, and makes me so physically uncomfortable I have to leave the room.

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes It is hard to describe the feeling when everything was all black. I was fully aware, but it was like my body was gone and just my consciousness was somewhere.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience as accurately as other life events that occurred around the time of the experience

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes I suffer from incredibly lucid and detailed dreams, once of which I specifically woke up by falling back into my body. One also involved my grandmother (who has since died), who appeared to help me, as a spirit (I knew she was deceased in the dream) to wake me up as if I was in danger. (When I woke I was completely overheated and covered in sweat, almost smothered underneath a blanket). I also have had premonition dreams about 9/11, the boxing day tsunami and the explosion in Lebanon.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? Not initially. After having the later lucid dream with my deceased grandmother helping me, I realized how connected I am to her, even now.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? Yes Just hearing about what can happen (the tunnel, life flashing before your eyes, etc).

What do you believe about the reality of your experience now? Experience was definitely real. I felt very conscious and never doubted that what I experienced wasn't real.

At any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the experience? Yes My reaction to certain noises, particularly that loud beep noise.
