Experience Description

My platoon was coming back from one of our small outposts. A car sped past us on the road. I didn’t pay any attention to the car, but others in my platoon did. I heard the radio saying to be ready, because a guy just dropped off two women and then took off in a different direction. We knew something was going to happen since these were common tactics of prior ambush attacks. On our way to another outpost, nothing happened. So we kept pushing forward.

The lead truck ran over an improvised explosive device (IED), causing it to explode 3 to 5 seconds later. I was in the second truck that took the force of the explosion.

I remember looking down on my body and thinking, 'Man, they got me! This is where my story ends.' I was looking at all of the destruction. I saw wheels with tires still attached and fuel tanks flying hundreds of feet outward. I didn’t see a light. I just remember looking down and saying, 'No, this isn’t how it’s going to end for me.

All of the sudden, I was lying down on my pedestal. I am 100% disabled, and I still have nightmares. I wake up in tears every day and have to escape into pills for a few more hours of sleep to wake up feeling somewhat normal
