Experience Description

I was 6 years old and in surgery for a tonsillectomy and an adenoidectomy. It was my very first surgery, I had ever had. My heart flatline for about 90 seconds. My mother kept the printout they gave her back then.

I was soaring or floating through a long black, tube-like place and at the end there was the brightest light I have ever seen. Once I got through the light, I saw the most beautiful, full, and colorful autumn-like trees. The sky was bright blue, the grass was lush and green. I felt calm with no worries.

Just when I was able to get a good look at all that was around me, I was sucked backwards through that tube of darkness. I wasn't afraid. If anything, I was disappointed I could not stay.

To this day, I have tried to find something that gorgeous. I love the autumn season but cannot find any trees of the sort on Earth as saw during that experience. I haven't found the blue of the sky or grass that green. I have not felt that calm either, even a state of meditation.

Background Information:

Gender: Female

Date NDE Occurred: 1997

NDE Elements:

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? Yes Surgery-related Clinical death (cessation of breathing or heart function)

How do you consider the content of your experience? Entirely pleasant

Did you feel separated from your body? Uncertain When I was eventually sucked backwards, I heard 'NO!' I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal. There was peace. Today, I am a constant worrier and overthinker. In that moment, no one else mattered. For example, looking back - if I would have passed, I know my mother would have been devstated. Thinking about that I feel guilt, in the experience, I was at rest, in awe if you will. I was finally at a place of completion.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? Interesting question, I would say yes. Nothing was bothering me or in my mind besides that particular experience.

Were your thoughts speeded up? No

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning Time did not exist, or it stopped. I was not aware of what time it was.

Were your senses More vivid than usual? Incredibly more vivid

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. Everything was brighter, clearer, and more vivid. I would purchase any type of eyeglass that would allow me to see as such. But those glasses don't exist. I currently live in Michigan where the trees are always lush in the autumn, NOTHING can compare to what I saw during that experience.

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. It was quiet and still. No outside vibration or inner monologue. I remember expressing, 'wow.' No cars, no talking, not sirens, nothing.

Did you seem to be aware of things going on elsewhere? No

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? Yes

Did you see any beings in your experience? No

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings? No

Did you see, or feel surrounded by, a brilliant light? An unusually bright light

Did you see an unearthly light? Yes The light was so bright until I reached the other side, like something you want to chase to see but need to squint (in this realm).

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Calm, peacefulness, awe, completion.

Did you have a feeling of peace or pleasantness? Incredible peace or pleasantness

Did you have a feeling of joy? Incredible joy

Did you feel a sense of harmony or unity with the universe? I felt united or one with the world

Did you suddenly seem to understand everything? Everything about myself or others. It was like the place I went knew exactly what I liked or desired. Being older now, I continue to chase that feeling, whether through drinking/spirituality/gardening, it's the idea of questioning how to get back to that state of being.

Did scenes from your past come back to you? No

Did scenes from the future come to you? No

Did you come to a border or point of no return? I came to a barrier that I was not permitted to cross; or was sent back against my will I did not want to go back to where we are now. As described earlier, I was essentially sucked backwards against my will to return to this life.

God, Spiritual and Religion:

What was your religion prior to your experience? Unaffiliated- Nothing in particular- Secular unaffiliated. We were not religious, but my mother always prayed.

Have your religious practices changed since your experience? Yes I am VERY spiritual now. Growing up, I did not really care. It's almost like I want to thank the other side for even letting me have that experience if only for a few seconds.

What is your religion now? Other faiths- Unitarian and other liberal faiths Spiritual - I believe in the Universe

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was both consistent and not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience. They were non-consistent at the time. I was so young that I was unable to have my own beliefs. As an adult now, these beliefs are how I live my life. They are, in essence, my soul's belief.

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? Yes After such, my mom raised me Christian, now I am Spiritual. There are vast differences. I believe all is connected, anything on this realm is entirely a test or made up, and true living is on the other side. This realm is all about lessons.

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice? No

Did you see deceased or religious spirits? No

Did you encounter or become aware of any beings who previously lived on earth who are described by name in religions (for example: Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.)? No

During your experience, did you gain information about premortal existence? No

During your experience, did you gain information about universal connection or oneness? Uncertain I am still chasing this answer today. I believe in my heart that there is a universal connection, but I have no logical proof of such.

During your experience, did you gain information about the existence of God? No

Concerning our Earthly lives other than Religion:

During your experience, did you gain special knowledge or information about your purpose? Uncertain I would typically say yes, I was sent back for a reason, to let people know this exists, to continue. Almost like, I was chosen to see this place when everyone is not, but I guess special knowledge is not for me to categorize.

During your experience, did you gain information about the meaning of life? No

During your experience, did you gain information about an afterlife? Yes I would like to state that it is not a continuation of this current life, the life we are living. It is different. But there is a continuation of something, whether that be just a soul existence or experience. I am unsure.

Did you gain information about how to live our lives? No

During your experience, did you gain information about life's difficulties, challenges and hardships? No

During your experience, did you gain information about love? No

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Moderate changes in my life As I have grown into an adult, this experience has made me research and try to uncover my soul's purpose. It has certainly been a driving force to the feeling that we are all here for lessons. I believe we are soul's in a skin suit with the goal to grow, flourish, and experience; Not JUST survive.

Have your relationships changed specifically because of your experience? No one is promised another day, losing people is absolutely sad, but knowing what I felt during that experience - it's hard to be selfish versus happy that the lost one gets to experience what I did. Yes

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes Anyone can talk about trees and green grass, but it was the experience. I perceive only those that have had this experience can relate. The actual feeling the emotion doesn't have words. I believe the feeling I had in that experience does not exist on this ethereal realm.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience I remember the experience itself very accurately, but I do not remember what happened once I was sent back to this realm.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes I would not say psychic, but I am VERY empathic to where I can walk into a room and feel what others are feeling. I may not know why, but I can feel it.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? It was all significant. But now, experience aside, to others I am obsessed with trees or tree chasing. I have been trying to find a tree that resembles or is even as 1/2 as beautiful as the one I saw during that experience. I try to be good to mother nature, treat her with respect. I want to leave this realm better than I came into it.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? No

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? No

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was probably not real I thought it was a dream until the confirmation of hearing Dr. Jeffrey speak on it.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience now? Experience was definitely real. I've always had this connection, this unspeakable desire to the other side. I want to know, I want to feel, I want that peace. I've never been able to find it. And I believe one only achieves such desires on the other side.

At any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the experience? Uncertain I am unsure how to answer this question.

Is there anything else that you would like to add about your experience? I think this experience has shaped me into who I am as an adult today. Most certainly. I perceive that I am always chasing a moment of beauty or a feeling of peacefulness I got to experience during that time. It never made sense of what I was chasing until I heard of NDE.
