I was twenty five and had started working for a water well company that paid pretty good for the small town we lived in. The work was hard and dangerous. We worked all year round. Even in the snow. I liked the work and was good at it. The only part I didn't like was at times near the building/house the trench was deep 12-15 or more feet deep. And I had to lay down on my stomach to find the plumbers stub out so I could attach the well line to it. I tried not to worry about what could happen during that time.
I hadn't been with the company long when this dream took place for about a week. In the dream I was rehearsing what I'd do during a cave in. Like a play but I didn't know how it would end. Towards the end of the week I finally said enough, I get it. I know my part. And it stopped and never returned nor did I ever think about it again.
A month later my partner Dale and I headed out to a commercial site where a deep well was going in. And because of the frost line the trench had to be deeper then normal. 12Ft deep about my shoulder width. Dale was in a bad mood for some reason and was about to put the waders on to roll out the soft copper pipe. I jumped up and said give me those waders and I'll do it. I told him to go work at the well head.
The bottom of the trench had running water which made walking in the muck hard. The shale walls were heavy with water from spring thaw. The ground was shacking from the backhoe. So I made the connection of pipe at the well head and started to roll this 1 ½ “ soft copper pipe down the trench stepping on it as I went. It was slow going for I was hunched over fighting the muck and copper pipe not worrying about a thing until I glanced up on my right side to see the wall slipping away.
I knew what to do because it was rehearsed in my dreams. I let go of the pipe and stood up straight against the opposite wall, called to Dale, took a deep breath and covered my chest with my arms and closed my eyes tight. What went through my head was “ Am I going to die” ? Yes the voice said. But I don't want to die, there must be a way out of this? No the voice said. The pressure of the dirt was slowly squeezing me to death. I was screaming in my head “When then?” More pain. The pain grew and so did my screaming when all of a sudden I was in no pain at all. I was moving and moving fast. Eyes still closed. What about my family I thought? They will be fine the voice said and I was good with that cause I knew it was true.
When I finally opened my eyes there was a beautiful city that shined like the sun. Is that heaven I asked? Yes the voice said. Then in a flash I had met my grandfather. He was much younger and very happy. In another flash I was at the bottom of the great stairs which lead up. As I looked up and focused there was God, Christ, and the Spirit surrounded by angels singing and praising. I fell to the ground for I knew where I was. Christ lifted me up and gave me a hug and said I love you. At some point my life was reviewed and I was told that it wasn't my time and would be sent back. Before I could question that I found myself in an orb of pure love and was cradled in the arms of it. As I fell asleep being in total love and comfort I was placed back into my body.
A boulder had rolled down and hit me in the head. I opened my eyes and felt the warmth of the sun on my face. No pain. Just love and comfort. Dale was crying and digging as fast as he could. I looked into his eyes and said I was fine, I am alive. But he wasn't hearing me. Why wasn't he hearing me. As I looked into this I realized I wasn't breathing. Damn! Panic started to set in. What did it feel like to breath. Breath!!! What was the sensation of breathing? I took my first breath and that's when it felt like I was hit by a train. The pain, oh the pain. I wrapped my arm around my side to hold me together. Dale I said. Get me out of here. No he said. Help me out? I was in a fetus position. I was pushed down and crushed. The pain was overwhelming. Felt like maybe a rib went through a lung. So I gathered the strength I had left and stood up. Slammed my free hand into the dirt and pulled myself out without any help leaving these people in total shock. Get me to the hospital I said. No phones around to call flight for life or anything. So I had Dale drive me.
I was back at work doing the same thing three days later until about the 4th year my body couldn't take it anymore and went into total left side spasms.
A month later I went to
college to re-train myself in computer science
