The way this is organized is a bit problematic.  I have lost the entire database several times and created new ones and added a lot of new information.  So, rather than wait for the miracle of time, I am putting up both data sources from the prior work and the current work.  Much could be redundant.  However, there are enough new discoveries to make the family search worth the look.

      1.
J. Edward2 Allison (Maybe Bailey1) was born October 21, 1808 in Madison Co. KY: (Roni says October 10, 1808), and died March 03, 1888 in The Dalles, Wasco, OR.  He married (1) Sara.  She was born in Madison Co. KY.  He married (2) Jane Ann Jackson March 30, 1843, daughter of Isham Jackson.  She was born February 28, 1827 in Jessamine Co. KY, and died September 12, 1890 in Newton, IA.

Notes for J. Edward Allison:

Trinity Journal, Weaverville, CA  3/17/1888

Deaths - At the Dalles, Wasco Co.,
Oregon, March 3rd, 1888, Mr. Edward Allison, aged 70 years, 4 months and 13 days, formerly an old resident of Nevada and Trinity County.  He is gone from among us; gone forever.  No more will his genial countenance be seen in the fireside and social circles of yore, for the places that once knew him, will know him no more. No wintry winds will wildly sweep and waken him with murmurs chilly; His slumbers are too deep and sweet, Beneath the northern sun and lily.  We miss thee, dearly loved one, And our hearsy are full of pain, While we listen for the footsteps We never shall hear again.

Trinity Journal, Weaverville, CA

Death of Edward Allison. - Under the proper heading in today's Times the reader will be informed of the death of Edward Allison, who formerly resided in this township, between Birchville and French Corral, at the place now known as Skehan's ranch, and who was well-known to the old residence of this township and county.  A letter from his daughter Lucy, now Mrs. William Vollmer's, of Trinity Center, dated March 3rd, gives the following particular is concerning deceased:  Edward Allison was born in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1809.  He came to California with his family in 1850 and settled on the banks of Deer Creek, now Nevada City, where he resided until about the year 1853, when he removed with his family, to what is now the Skehan ranch, where he remained until the 1875, when he removed to San Jose.  In 1878 he moved, with his family, to
Trinity Center, Trinity County, where he engaged in mining.  Last fall he was called to the bedside of his son, Charles at the Dalles, Oregon, who was then the lying ill with typhoid fever, he having just buried his wife, who died of the same disease.  About the time Charles was recuperating and Mr. Allison was preparing to return to his home at Trinity Center, he was taken down with typhoid fever, and, as stated elsewhere, on the third of March, breathed his last.  His was a busy life as well as an eventful one.  He leaves many friends, who will grieve because of his departure, for he had a noble and generous heart and was always kind to the poor and needy.  Prior to his death he became a member of the Methodist Church, and died in the belief that his sins of commission and omission were washed away by the blood of Christ.  His voice of mirth have ceased; amidst the vineyard there is left no place.  Earth must take earth to molder on her breasts.  Come near!  Weep o'er him-bear him to rest.  The deceased left a wife, three sons, three daughters and 14 grandchildren to mourn his loss.  His remains lie buried near his daughter-in-law, wife of his son Charles at the Dallas, Oregon, Peace to them.  North San Juan Times, March 16th.

Dee Bigler Letter 4/13/2000

Edward Allison, is also a mystery, at this point he is known in this family to have been a gambler, which is entirely possible.  I found him on the 1860 census in CA, with our James N. being 22 years old, but Edward has a new wife & family along with our James.  Edward is quite well off for the day, having may employees & cash on hand, he is listed as a farmer, however on the 1870 census he is listed as a hotel owner.  Gambling was a big part of the
California gold rush; in 1849 40,000 men went to CA and less than 800 women.  With so many men, so much time and money, gambling took up much of their spare time along with other vices.

JAMES N. ALLISON
James N. Allison.  About three miles east from Fruitland is located the fine residence and estate of the subject of this review. A score of years ago, Mr. Allison made his way through the then wild country, selected this place and went back to Fort Spokane, where his family and stuff were, and took the light wagon and made his way to the spot.  The heavier vehicles could not be brought in.  From that time to the present, he and his faithful wife, who has always displayed true courage and worth, have wrought to bring up their family and build a home, which have been accomplished with gratifying success.

James N. Allison was born in Madison county, Kentucky, on November 4, 1839, and his parents, Edward and Sarah Allison, were natives of the same place.  In 1847 the family went to Platte county, Missouri, and in the spring of 1850 they came to
Nevada county, California, across the plains, meeting difficult with the Indians at Humboldt river.  Later they mined at French Corrall and there on January 10, 1866, our subject married Miss Nellie L., daughter of Liba and Sarah (Bradish) Washburn, natives of Vermont and New York, respectively. They removed to Jackson County, Michigan, where Mrs. Allison was born August 15, 1845.  Mr. Washburn was a lawyer, made a raise on Poorman's creek, and voted the first Republican ticket in Sutter county, California.  He was a prominent and influential man there and in Nevada, where he lived later.  He first came alone to seek gold, then returned and brought his family via the isthmus.  The mother of Mrs. Allison was an invalid for years and died at French Corrall on September 3, 1864. The father died in Stevens County in 1890 and is buried on Mr. Allison's ranch.  Our subject raised stock in Sutter County until 1875 and then went to Paradise valley in Nevada.  In 1882 he came with a band of horses to Fort Spokane and thence as we have related to his present place.  Five children were in the family then and the hardships of frontier life and journeying in a prairie schooner were all endured by the family.  The estate of Mr. Allison is one of the best here, the residence is situated in a most sightly place and the orchard, the first in the country, is fine.  Mr. Allison and his wife have labored faithfully and wisely and have manifested great interest in all progressive movements and in building up the country.  They have six children Armillia F., wife of J.S. McLean; Liba E., married to Laura Thomas; Lucy A., wife of Edward S. Sullivan; Albert F., married to Addie Bennett; Pearl L., wife of James L. Ross; James C., the third white child born in the Fruitland valley.  All live near Fruitland.  Mrs. Allison's grandfather, Daniel Bradish, was a patriot in the Revolution, an officer in the War of 1812 and died in 1857, in his ninety-ninth year.

Generation No. 1

1.  RICHARD3 BARTLETT  (EDMUND2 BARTTELOT, EDMUND1) was born Abt. 1575 in Wiltshire, England, and died 25 May 1647 in Newbury, Mass..  He married JOAN(E) Bef. 1610 in England.  She was born Abt. 1585, and died 05 Feb 1643/44 in New Castle, NH.

Notes for RICHARD BARTLETT:

Narrative||

In the records, the name Bartlett is also spelled variously as Bartlet, Bartlit and Bartlot.  The emigrant ancestor is Richard Bartlett, one of the earliest settlers of Newbury, living there before 1637 (Sterns, Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, 1:158-159). Many genealogical works trace the ancestry of Richard Bartlett back to Adam Barttelot who came with William the Conqueror from Normandy to England. This subject is treated very convincingly in Forefathers and Descendants of William and Genevieve Bartlett [Portland, Maine : The Anthonensen Press, 1952]. However, another source contains equally convincing evidence that Richard Bartlett descended from landless serfs instead of Adam Barttelot. New England Historical and Genealogical Register volume 40, April 1886, pp. 192-204. This source also contains an extensive essay on early Newbury and the Bartlett family. The wife of Richard Bartlett, the emigrant, seems to have been named Joane (Boston Transcript, 7 Mar 1927, item 5262). In a letter written to Rethel West in 1920, Churchill Jones Bartlett wrote of "some members of the Bartlett family, more or less well known, with whom we have a common ancestor in the immigrant Richard Bartlett of Newbury."

-Josiah-5 Bartlett (Stephen-4, Richard-3, Richard-2, Richard-1). First Governor of New Hampshire and signer of the Declaration of American Independence in 1776.

-Washington-8 Bartlett (???-7, Stephen-6, Richard-5, Joseph-4, Richard-3, Richard-2, Richard-1). Governor of California in 1886 to 1889.

-Samuel-8 Bartlett (Samuel-7, Joseph-6, Joseph-5, Stephen-4, Richard-3, Richard-2, Richard-1). He was President of Dartmouth College, New Hampshire.

-John Henry-10 Bartlett (John-9, John-8, Solomon-7, John-6, David-5, David-4, Richard-3, Richard-2, Richard-1). He is the present governor of New Hampshire (1920). Birth: ABT 1575 in Wiltshire, England 2 Death: 25 MAY 1647 in Newbury, Essex county, Massachusetts 3

Generation No. 4

4.  JOHN6 BARTLETT (RICHARD5, RICHARD4, RICHARD3, EDMUND2 BARTTELOT, EDMUND1) was born 23 Sep 1678 in Newbury, Essex county, Massachusetts, and died Abt. 1736 in Newbury, Mass..  He married MARY ORDWAY 18 Nov 1702 in Newbury, Mass., daughter of JOHN ORDWAY and MARY GODFREY.  She was born 18 Sep 1682 in Newbury, Essex county, Massachusetts, and died 06 Apr 1755.

Notes for JOHN BARTLETT:

Death date based on sale of land in Kingston in Oct. of 1736 by Seth and Nathan, sons of John of Newbury, deceased. There is a Newbury Vital record for the death of a John, tanner, May 24, 1736 a. 80 yr., 11 mo, 2 d., son of Richard Jr. and Abigail. This would place birth as 1655 and is most likely the John Bartlett who married Mary Rust, who, if the father of Seth above would have had Seth 34 years after his marriage. This Richard's son Nathan went to Elliot, ME, and had no ties to Kingston as Seth and Nathan Bartlett did, sons of John Bartlett and Mary Ordway. There may be in error in the Newbury Vital statistics of the time in confusing the John Bartletts, at which at one time there were 4 still living at the same time in Newbury, MA. Thus the most likely scenario is that given here.

Vital records of Newbury also show a John Bartlett died Mar. 23, 1740 (or 1741) and from Church Records age 62 y.

Children of JOHN BARTLETT and MARY ORDWAY are:

                   i.    JOHN7 BARTLETT, b. 02 Sep 1711, Newbury, Mass.; d. 06 Mar 1798, Nottingham, Rockingham county, New Hampshire; m. ZIPPORAH FLANDERS, 17 Jan 1733/34, Salisbury, Mass.; b. 04 Mar 1715/16, Salisbury, Essex county, Massachusetts; d. 07 Oct 1780.

Note: anti-patriot?||

John Bartlett of Southhampton and Nottingham, New Hampshire, married Zipporah Flanders, daughter of Phillip Flanders. John and Zipporah Bartlett had ten children; six died in the Summer of 1751. At John's death, he left four sons; Philip, John, Samuel and Nehemiah. (Boston Transcript, 16 Jul 1919, item 1950) (7 Mar 1927, item 5262-2). The first six children are listed in this source (The Essex Antiquarian, 7:1:Jan 1903:10).

The Association Test: On 12 Apr 1776, the Committee of Safety of the Colony of New Hampshire passed the following resolution - ....all males above twenty one years of age (lunatics, idiots and Negroes excepted) will sign the declaration on this paper; and when so done, make return thereof, together with the names of all who shall refuse to sign the same. (New Hampshire Provincial and State Papers, 8:204-205, 261-262).

We, the Subscribers, do hereby solemnly engage, and promise, that we will, to the utmost of our Power, at the Risque of our Lives and Fortunes, with Arms, oppose the Hostile Proceedings of the British Fleets and Armies against the United American Colonies.

The New Hampshire returns of the Association Test show John Bartlett refused to sign, no reason given, but a note was made that he did advance money to hire men to go to Crown Point[:ITAL]. [Compiler's note: Crown Point most certainly refers to the expedition, twenty years earlier, about 1757, during the French and Indian War.

Of the 129 adult male residents of Nottingham, 15 did not sign the Association Test for religious reasons, and 15 did not sign with no reason given.

Those colonists who remained favorable to centralized British control and the maintenance of the colonial status quo were known as conservatives, Tories or Loyalists. Those who advocated a change, an overturn, a revolution were known as radicals, Whigs or revolutionists (Richard Francis Upton, Revolutionary New Hampshire, first published 1936, reissued 1970 [Port Washington, NY : Kennikat Press].

Known loyalists were considered traitors; they were expelled from the colonies and their property confiscated. There is no indication that John Bartlett was in this category; he was probably a conscientious objector.

Benjamin Whittier, also did not sign, no reason given. He is the father of Abigail Whitcher who married Nehemiah, son of John Bartlett. However, perhaps the loyalty of Benjamin Whittier was questioned; see Whittier line, Benjamin Whittier (1722-1803).

While John Bartlett did not sign the Association Test, two of his relatives were most eminent patriots:

......The Honorable Josiah Bartlett (1729-1795), son of Stephen Bartlett (1691-1773); the relationship to John Bartlett is first cousin. Called from a successful medical practice, he filled offices of trust and honor in New Hampshire and the new nation; signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence, July 1776; held several judgeships and was chosen as the first governor of the State of New Hampshire. (NH Provincial & State Papers, 10:9).

......Thomas Bartlett (1748-1807) of Nottingham; son of Samuel b. 1712, son of Thomas b. 1681, son of Samuel b. 1646, son of Richard (1621-1698). Richard Bartlett (1621-1698) is the commonly shared ancestor, making Thomas and John Bartlett Second Cousins, once removed. Aside from offices of  minor grade, Thomas Bartlett served as Colonel of one of the New Hampshire regiments for the defense of West Point in 1780. After the revolution, he was speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and Justice of the Court of Common Pleas. (NH Provincial and State Papers, 10:9)
