EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:
I was eleven years old. At this time I was a prominent softball player. I was the pitcher of my recreational team. We had just advanced to the national tournament and were 3 strikes away from being the best in the country. It was all up to me. I licked my fingers as I watched my next victim approach the plate. We shared a challenging look from across the infield. She squared up to me and I went into my "zone." First pitch was a perfect strike, a swing and a miss. I laid the next strike right on the outer corner of the plate. She let it pass. One pitch from the national title. I could taste it. I threw my last pitch right to the batter's "sweet spot." She made contact with the ball. I heard the crack of the bat and sprang into action, realizing that the ball was heading straight toward me. Everything suddenly slowed down and became completely silent. The crowd was on their toes. I came to the realization that I couldn't stop the speeding ball. It was heading straight for my face. I ducked a bit but my efforts made no difference. The ball hit me square in the eye.
I suddenly felt my world spiral, I saw a bright light, and then total darkness. I heard the crowd gasp. I saw my childhood, my entire short life flash before my eyes like a film. I landed with a loud thud against the soft dirt of the mound. I felt I was dead. Gone. An immense feeling of peace overcame me as I let my eyes close.
I
woke up with a broken eye socket and a hospital band on my wrist. The only
complications I've carried from the incident are a very tender face and Alexia,
a form of Dyslexia brought on by severe head trauma.
