EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:

My alcoholic illness lasted 35 years, ending in November 1997, when I entered an alcoholic coma 3 weeks long. During that time I had a fit of delirium and a gastric hemorrhage. Would it be during the latter that my experience occurred? I suddenly found myself floating upwards from the bed, towards the ceiling of my hospital room where I remained, lightly floating and weightless. I could see all around me without turning my head - 360°of panoramic vision. Looking down, I could see myself on the bed, around which people in white gowns were standing, working on me with great haste. I wandered around for a while (of course I don't know for how long, or where I was) and I found myself near a big tunnel which had an irresistible attraction for me. At the end of it there was a great white light which seemed beneficent and felt calming to me. The calmness of this light contrasted with the agitation down below. So, happily, I moved toward this tunnel, but just as I was entering it, I felt myself being dragged away from it by my feet. This really bothered me deeply, so it was in an angry state that I re-entered my fleshly envelope.

At the time of your experience was there an associated life-threatening event? Yes, a 3-week alcoholic coma.

Was the experience difficult to express in words? No

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness?

As I made my "trip" to the ceiling.

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal . I had the feeling I understood everything with calm and lucidity.

In the course of my coma I perceived words, fragment of phrases, but during the experience everything was calm and restful.

Did you see or hear any earthly events that were occurring during a time that your consciousness / awareness was apart from your physical / earthly body? Yes. I saw (but can one use this word?) the hospital staff busy around my body.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Calm, serenity, peacefulness.

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? No. I started to enter the tunnel but that was the moment I was returned to my body.

Did you see an unearthly light? Yes. White, brilliant but not at all damaging, welcoming even.

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice? No

Did you encounter or become aware of any beings who previously lived on earth who are described by name in religions (for example: Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.)? No

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings? No

Did you become aware of past events in your life during your experience? No

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm. A world of peace, serenity.

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning

Did you suddenly seem to understand everything? No

Did you reach a boundary or limiting physical structure? No

Did you come to a border or point of no return? No

Did scenes from the future come to you? No

During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness suggesting that there either is (or is not) continued existence after earthly life (“life after death”)? No

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience?

Yes. The possibility of making involuntary contact with deceased persons.

Have you ever shared this experience with others?Yes. A bit of incredulity at first.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? No

I look on life after death with a great deal of caution, and am less certain of the non-existence of a superior essence or another form of life following death.
