EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:

On a typical warm summer vacation day during the summer of 1976, I decided to travel with a friend from Allentown, Pa to Ocean City, NJ to enjoy sailing my 16' Hobbie Cat on the ocean. Our plan was to sail into the Atlantic from one of the many inlets inland where we could park the car for free on the side of the road. after only a few miles of searching we found a small sandy area located adjacent to a bridge where we could back the car and trailer down to the water and offload the Cat. It was the perfect spot and by 11:00am we were sailing.

All afternoon we did our best showing off our sailing skills to the ladies and onlookers, riding waves and "hulling it" into the beach. We were blonde, buffed and bronze.

By 4:00pm the air began to chill, the clouds grew darker and a light summer rain began to fall. We had a good 4 miles to sail back to the bridge, if we could find it...by luck we did on our first try. It was getting dark but we made it.

In order to shield ourselves from the wind, we sailed as close to the base of the bridge as possible without having the mast get tangled in some of the the dangling wires that we observed were just loosely crisscrossing underneath the bridge from one side to the other. Perfect approach and a perfect glide up onto the sandy beach. We made it.

It takes two people to put away the mast. I grabbed the bottom of the mast and twisted to unlock it, slowly it began to fall away into the hands of my friend at the back of the boat. When the mast was at about a 45 degree angle I remember hearing a loud crack. A bolt of electricity jumped from the loose wires dangling from below the bridge to the lightning rod I was holding in my hands. The massive amount of electricity entered my palms and with full force picked me up and thrust me into the air. The energy of the lift pushed me like a rocket, up thru the atmosphere and into the extremely bright light with eyes wide open. The air felt clean, warm, and light with no downward gravitational pull. The time from the initial electric shock to the bright light was (this may sound crazy) instantaneous but not a a hurried pace. I felt an immediate attraction and curiosity about this state of where I was, and wanted more. The soothing mesmerizing beauty of the light captured my soul and gently I floated higher and higher. I drifted with purity, fully trusting, completely engrossed, full of energy, clear thinking and more alive and aware then at any time in my life.

Suddenly my arms and legs were transformed to propeller blades and I hovered like a helicopter for an instant. The pull towards the light stopped and the second phase of my journey began. Slowly I began to sink and my life unfolded in the form of movie highlights. Important events were replayed in short snippets in black and white and played from a reel to reel movie projector. This part of the journey did feel gravitational pull and weight. This journey was also shorter in length then the original climb and had no lust or curiosity in what lays ahead. It was more cold hard facts, missing the mesmerizing spirituality and emotional pull of love from some kind of God or force.

It has been more than 30 years ago since this gift was given to me that summer afternoon. I remember this experience in detail as though it happened yesterday. With no exception have I ever felt the peaceful beauty of this event in any other conscious activity while on earth. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that I was traveling to another place in time. Now that I tasted real life I live with  no fear of the future and rest comfortably that my departed loved ones are at peace...up there somewhere.
