NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE

1884년도 일입니다. 저의 할머니는 그린빌의 대저택에서 가족들과 함께 살고 계셨습니다. 할아버지는 의사였고, 네 명의 아이들은 갓난 아기부터 10살 사이였습니다. The setting for these events is 1884. My grandmother lived with her family in a large home in Greenville, Michigan. She was the mother of four living children ranging in age from ten to an infant. My grandfather was a family doctor. 

저는 아주 오래 전 들은 대로, 기억하는 대로 그녀의 사후 경험을 이야기하겠습니다. 또한 저의 아버지의 자서전에 기록된 내용들을 첨부합니다. I will tell her story of a near death experience as I remember it being told to me many years ago. I am also attaching my father's account of these events as he recorded them in the thirties as a part of his autobiography.

할머니는 매우 아프셨고, 아이들의 소동으로부터 떨어져 있기 위해 3층 방을 쓰고 계셨습니다. 아이들과 가사 일은 따로 고용된 사람이 돌보고 있었습니다. 이 시기 동안 할머니는 어떤 사람이 이야기해 준 것도 아니고, 들을 수도 없는데, 집안 곳곳에서 일어나는 일들과 마을에서 일어나는 일들에 대해 알고 있는 것 같았습니다. 제가 보고할 수 있는 유일한 예는 예를 들면, “옆집 사람이 새로 만든 버터를 가져왔어. 그렇지, 그걸 가져와라.” 절대로 그녀가 이 사실에 대해서 볼 수도 들었을 수도 없었습니다. 저는 이 밖에도 다른 많은 이상한 이야기들을 들었습니다. My grandmother was seriously ill. An upstairs room on the third floor of the home was set aside as sickroom for her, away from the hubbub of her active children. A "hired girl" cared for the children and took care of running the household while grandmother was sick. During this period of time my grandmother seemed to have an uncanny knowledge of what was happening in the household and in the neighborhood, although no one was providing her the information nor could she hear what was happening on the floors below. The only example of this that I can recount is, for instance, she said, "A neighbor has brought over some freshly-chummed butter and left it at the back door. Will you, please, bring it in." There was no way she could have seen or heard this happening. I was told there were many other such instances.

My grandfather brought in a medical colleague for consultation. While they were with her she ceased to breathe and neither my grandfather not his colleague could feel a pulse. They declared her dead but my grandfather was not one to give up easily. He rigged up a battery to give a shock to her heart. She began to breathe again and lived another fifty years.

 할머니는 죽었다고 판정된 후 다시 숨을 쉬기까지의 놀라운 경험을 자세히 설명했습니다. 할머니는 강을 따라 천천히 여행하는 기분이었다고 합니다. 아름다운 노래 소리가 들렸고, 전에는 경험하지 못했던 종류의 평화와 기쁨을 느꼈다고 합니다. 할머니는 자신이 죽었다는 것을 알았고, 하늘나라에 와 있다고 믿었습니다. 그때, 다시 돌아 가야 한다는, 아이들이 그녀를 필요로 한다는 생각과 동시에 그 곳을 떠나기 싫다는 상반된 생각이 들었다고 합니다. 내부의  고심은 상당히 계속되었고, 그때 갑자기 깨어났고, 건강을 되찾았습니다. 할머니는 그후 만족된 삶을 온전히 사셨고, 아이들이 모두 커서 그들 자신의 삶을 살아가는 것을 지켜봤습니다. She recounted a most remarkable experience during this period of time after being declared Dead." She felt as though she were taking a gentle journey down a river. She heard beautiful music. She felt a degree of peace and joy such as she had never experienced before. She believed she was in heaven and recognized that she had died. While this was going on she began to have conflicting thoughts-I must go back, my children need me vs. I can't leave this contentment and beauty. This internal struggle went on for some time. Then she awakened and recovered her health, living a full and satisfying life, and seeing her children all grow up and have successful lives of their own.

저의 어머니가 아프셨던 것이 생생한 기억으로 또한 남아 있습니다. 제 형과 저는 풍진이었으나 심하지는 않았습니다. 그런데, 저희를 간호하던 어머니가 같은 병으로 쓰러지졌고, 폐렴이 합병증으로 나타났습니다. 저희는 회복했으나, 어머니는 그러지 못하셨고, 의사가 어머니의 죽음을 선언했고, 어머니에게 작별인사를 하라고 했습니다. 하지만 아버지는 전기 충격을 포함해서 여러 가지 노력을 계속해서 했습니다. 상당한 시간 후에 어머니는 다시 숨을 쉬었고, 그 후 5년을 더 사셨습니다. 어머니는 아픈 신 동안 꿈속에서 여러 다른 장소를 방문하셨고 여러 장면들을 보셨습니다. 그리고 집안에서 일어나는 일들을 어떤 다른 사람이 전하지 않았음에도 불구하고 이야기할 정도로 훤하게 알고 있었습니다. 그녀는 아픈 동안 기이한 천리안을 가졌습니다. 이 기이한 현상은 설명 불가능한 일입니다. 회복 후 바로 휴양을 위해 메디슨으로 여행을 가셨고, 미시간 호수를 건너는데, 증기선에 불이 붙어 나이트 가운을 입고 저녁 내내 밖에서 시간을 보냈다고 합니다. Another vivid memory is the illness of my mother. My brothers and I had German measles, but not severely; however my mother, tired out with taking care of us, came down with the same disease, complicated with pneumonia, as we were recovering and after a severe illness was apparently dead. As she was failing we were called in to say goodbye to her when other doctors pronounced her dead, my father insisted on continuing various restorative measures, including an electrical battery , and after a time she again began to breath and lived for another fifty years. One feature of this illness was the clairvoyant dreams in which she seemed to visit other places and see various scenes. She was even able to tell of events and incidents, which occurred in the house during her illness and of which no one told her. This whole illness and the accompanying phenomena we were never able to explain. Right after this illness she took a trip to Madison, Wis. to rest up after the strain of her experience and while crossing Lake Michigan, her steamer caught fire and she spent most of the night in an open boat in her nightgown.
